Who Am I?

It was quite after some time that I could relax over the long weekend of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is not a custom in India (I mean as a planned holiday) and I could really sit back and abandon my office chores and perform a reset to my tiring routine.

That’s when my brain nibbled on a topic I had in mind to blog about. My friend, whom I had invited for the dinner, set the discussion going.
My friend said to me, “Men normally take daily decisions rationally and the most difficult decisions intuitively while women normally take daily decisions intuitively and make the most difficult decisions rationally.” This was signal enough for my wife to join in the discussion. While they continued on with the topic, I (as usual) applied his theory on ‘managers’ and ‘employees’.
For me, and for many of us in the corporate world, we rely mostly on our intellect to guide us in taking decisions. We often distrust our intuition, our inner voice or small signs that come to us through the situation.  Such decisions keep us in relationships longer than we should have been; kept us in jobs that at some time were not our best choices only because it was the most practical thing to do. We use intellect to weigh the pros and cons and move forward with a sense of certainty.
Intuition (I have covered this partially in another article on this blog) has a lot to do with our feelings and emotions. It shows up in small signs, senses and in parts, never as a whole indicator. When we move forward with an intuitive decision, we are placing great faith in the unknown, in ourselves and our ability to listen to our heart. But it is definitely not through our head (read intellect).
I started blogging recently after I felt the creative urge to write. It was sheer intuition as I got into the habit of taking notes and questioning everything on management style and options. This was the area I selected to blog on.
Why? Because I wanted to get away from my own image of the past and redefine myself! My friends, colleagues, adversaries and families had created an image of me and who I ‘am’. They had trapped my image in small boxes of their own memories and opinions. I needed to change this and reflect what I really ‘am’.
So when someone asks you, “Who are you?”, don’t take that question lightly.  You need to redefine yourself at least in eyes of those who DO allow their own images of you to change, to shatter their images and opinions about you and give you space to grow.  Remember; it is easier and more comfortable to sit in other people’s images and opinions at home than to express yourself anew – your true self.
So we all end up creating and reinforcing our own images and opinions and never truly communicate our true self with those around us.
It is when we decide to actually communicate, we start enjoying the opportunity to talk, to share and experiment with our new images – ones without the limitations of a ‘past’. It is like telling your network – “Well, sorry everyone, but I won’t sit in your box anymore”.
