3 Comments Blogging – My Own Reasons..
Earlier this week I read Pete Blackshaw’s column at http://www.clickz.com/3625581. He had enlisted ten reasons why he should stop blogging.
I had just started blogging and this article really made me think hard. Should I continue to blog? Or should I stop? Am I contributing “too little too late”? I kept on thinking and finally listed down my reasons why I consider it is is worthwhile to continue blogging:
(1) Ideas have to be expressed frequently and in different ways to be heard
The thing I like most about blogging is how we seed our thoughts as soon as the idea pops into our head.
We see if our ideas resonate with anyone else in our readership. It takes a while for new ideas to gain traction. So when new ideas are expressed in different ways in different places around the Web they’re given a better chance to grow and survive. Blogs are like incubators for new ideas. And that’s tremendously exciting.
(2) Everyone has a voice
We all have voices. Blogs allow us to express those voices. It’s not for anyone to say what is important and what is not important, which voice deserves to be heard and which voice should be silenced. None of them should be silenced. It’s your choice whether you choose to listen or not.
(3) You can find your voice only if you use it
The first time I spoke up, I did so very timidly. The first time I spoke in public, my words barely came out as a squeak. The more often I chose to speak up, the more confident my voice became. Similarly; the more I post in my blog, the easier it has become to express myself.
(4) Taking a position on issues is a good thing
Blogs are platforms for online conversations. Conversations usually happen when we take concrete positions on issues. People are interested to know where we stand on issues and they reciprocate in form of a dialog which can be called intense at times. Conversations are a good thing. Ideological debate is a good thing.
(5) There are topics and then there is relevance
When we pass along an interesting topic ,we try to add our own viewpoint and analysis. This adds value to the original topic and gives it dimension and perspective. As a blogger, I try to do the same. It’s one thing to just read. It’s another thing to analyse it and reflect it on areas of relevance to us.
(6) Communication is the heart of the Internet
No doubt about it. The Internet is a global community and the heart of this community is communication. Blogs represent the free flow of ideas back and forth within this community. If I were to stop blogging, I would be isolated from the most vibrant, most engaging community that has ever existed in our history.
(7) Our ideas can shift paradigms
An idea may seem like a throwaway to us, but once posted it may find it takes a life on of its own. Sometimes just expressing our viewpoint about one simple idea can make a difference for someone else out there who reads it. It can open their eyes to a reality they hadn’t seen before. Paradigm shifting can be a tremendously powerful thing and it can be initiated by a single blog post.
The more I though on the above points, the more I was convinced to continue blogging. I am confident that over a period of time, I will find a definite direction for this blog.
My single most hope today is that my blog becomes useful and gives insight on several issues to the career-minded aspiring employees who are in the early but formative stage of their careers.
So for now….I continue to blog and I hope – so does Pete..
